Turkey wants removal of quotas
|
The Turkish transport sector, through the intervention of the UND federation of international transporters, launched a campaign in Brussels last week calling for the removal of the bi-lateral system of transport permits. There are 24 European Union countries currently imposing quotas on Turkey which, according to the UND, doesn’t just represent a handicap to the Turkish road transport industry, but to the whole of the Turkish and European economies. Turkish exports are growing rapidly (up 23% to Germany and Spain in one year) whereas transport permits are only increasing slowly (up 3% in Germany and 0% in Spain, for example). Two countries are being particularly targeted; Italy (only 6,000 transit permits) and Bulgaria which, according to Turkey introduced a quota policy on the day of its accession to the EU, without legal basis.
